Airport Codes - ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Airports around the world are each known by a three letter code that
is unique to that airport. Airport codes are used to identify airports
easily so that airports can be recognized in any language.
The three letter code is a standard that is related to the IATA –
International Air Transport Association Location Identifier. A long
title for the group that sets the code for each airport.
Many of the airport codes are obvious. From BOS (Boston), to ATL (Atlanta)
many airport codes quickly and easily identify the airport. But some
codes are a bit more complex to figure out. A favorite example is the
Cincinnati airport. Cincinnati, a mid-sized U.S. city in Ohio actually
boasts an airport over the Ohio River in Kentucky. The city where the
Cincinnati Airport sits is actually Covington, KY. So, the Cincinnati
airport code is CVG for Covington. We used to live in the Cincinnati
area and people constantly mentioned how they had flown through Cincinnati
without every having set foot in Ohio.
We can't help but leave you with another favorite - it has to be when
a traveler is taking a trip to HEL. The airport code for Helsinki International
Airport.
